Land Ownership, Farm Management and Priority for The Target of Technology Transfer

(adm/Mar 28, 2010)

Research on the status of land ownership and farm management of wetland rice farming was carried out in six districts of rice producing areas, two districts in each of the three provinces in Java, namely West Java, Central Java, and East Java in 2009. Typical land holding for rice farmers in each district is very small, 0.3 ha, except in Karawang and Subang, West Java, land holding is one ha per farmer, or larger. The tendency for farmers having less than one ha of land in Karawang and Subang is to sell their land to the richer farmers, due to the meager income obtained from a such small land area. In Central and East Java, around 25% of the total farmers who have small land area tend to transfer the farm management to the shared-cropper who do not have land, while the land owners take various non-farm jobs. In West Java, farmers who have a large land assign a small area, of around 0.4 ha, to the shared cropper in order that the shared cropper faithfully help the farm works of the land owners. High number of landless farmers and high percentage of farms of less than 0.5 ha has tended to increase the proportion of shared-cropping system. (more ...)
