News » Minister of Research and Technology at IAARD Working Unit: Joint collaboration of two research institutions

(adm/Feb 10, 2009)

From 29 – 31 January 2009, Minister of Research and Technology Prof. Dr Kusmayanto Kadiman accompanied by the Director General of Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) Dr. Sumarjo Gatot Irianto, and a number of IAARD officials from Echelon II visited some Technical Implementing Units (UPT) under IAARD in East Java. This visit was not the maiden one, however for IAARD the Minister of Research and Technology’s visit had a special meaning. The purposes of the journey were not only to increase the collaboration program but also to conduct collaborative agricultural research between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research and Technology. As it is known, the Directorate of Higher Education (DIKTI), the Ministry of Research and Technology and the IAARD have agreed that agricultural research should be implemented in cooperation with research institutions both from government bodies and universities or colleges, and IAARD has been appointed as the team leader in the application process. In view of this, an immediate attempt to unite all potentials owned by research institutions namely IAARD and implementing units under Ministry of Research and Technology is urgently needed.

During the trip Minister of Research and Technology had a chance to observe and witness various facilities such as laboratories, germ plasms, as well as research outcomes from five Technical Implementing Units under IAARD. Among them are Center Research and Development for Indonesian Sugar (P3GI), Beef Cattle Research Station (Loka Sapi Potong), Indonesian Legumes and Tuber Crops Research Institute (Balitkabi),  and Indonesian Tobacco and Fiber Crops Research Institute (Balittas), East Java Assessment Institute for Agricultural Technology (BPTP Jatim) and Indonesian Citrus and Subtropical Fruits Research Institute (Balitjestro).

After the observation, Minister of Research and Technology and the Director General of IAARD held an open discussion with the researchers, aimed at identifying which collaborative agricultural research can be implemented by both institutions. The coming research should be aiming at knowledge or technology that is needed and can be directly applied by the society. At the same time, Minister of Research and Technology also expressed his interest on research outputs produced by each Technical Implementing Unit, and hoped that the researchers can continuously increase their performances especially in creating agro-innovation technology that provide benefits for the whole society.

As a follow up of this visit, Minister of Research and Technology and the Director General of IAARD will give a proposal to the North Sumatra Provincial Government to develop an integrated farming system of cow and oil palm. Minister of Research and Technology sees that such an integrated concept of cow and oil palm will be giving a great opportunity for the future exploitation, considering that North Sumatra Province owns a tremendously huge area of oil palm plantation. If the technology of combining the two commodities is sucessfully done, it will help to achieve the ‘beef self-sufficient program’ in 2013 as launched by the Ministry of Agriculture.
