YOGYAKARTA – IAARD has collaborated with International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) conducting the 7th International Hybrid Rice Symposium 2018 on February, 27th to March, 1st in the capital city of Yogyakarta Province.

The event was officially opened in Tuesday (27/2/2018) by the Vice Governoor, KGPA Aryo Paku Alam X, accompanied by IAARD Director, Dr. Muhammad Syakir, and Deputy Director General Communication and Partnerships IRRI, V. Bruce J. Tolentino. Theme for this year symposium is Food Security through Hybrid Rice under Changing Climatic Conditions.

On his speech, Director of IAARD emphasized that the government always put the highest priority in increasing rice production for food security goals. “We have relied on irrigated rice field for such years, now it is time for Indonesia to intensively utilise the potency of sub optimal lands, such as dry land, swampy land, and also land under the shade of estate crop plantation,” he added.

Director of IAARD addressed the prospect of hybrid rice to cope the circumstances of biotic and a-biotic, particularly in attempt to utilise sub optimal lands so that be able to maintain the production and ecosystem. “I hope that hybrid rice will play a pivotal role achieving this goal,” the Director highlighted. 

This event was attended by more than 200 participants from other countries. During the sessions, they are discussing various topics like breeding of hybrid rice, seed production, new technology applied, the economics value of hybrid rice, and also about policy regarding the development of hybrid rice.
