Denpasar – Bali Island has been chosen to welcoming delegates from ASEAN member countries and ASEAN partners for the 13th ASEAN Technical Working Group on Agricultural Research and Development (ATWGARD). This event was held in Denpasar, the capital city of Bali Province, for two days and at once with three workshops.

Executive Secretary of IAARD, Dr. M. Prama Yufdy, delivered a welcoming remark at the opening ceremony of the 13th ATWGARD (26/4/2018). He pointed out that ATWGARD plays a strategic role to address specific issues related to food security and climate change in ASEAN region, as the discussion covers the progress of various cooperation from the previous meeting.

Its role is also embedded in providing a platform for research and development activities that further will bring contributions to the common goals of ASEAN Economic Community. Therefore, collaboration among ASEAN countries and ASEAN working group will be the key to address any challenges in agricultural development. The challenges, indeed, have raised the need for agriculture innovation to increase food productions and reduce food losses.

Three workshops conducted at once with 13th ATWGARD were: (i) Workshop on Developing ASEAN Guidelines on Gender Mainstreaming in the Food, Agriculture and Forestry Sector, (ii) Workshop on Developing ASEAN Guidelines on Promoting Responsible Investment on Agriculture and Forestry Sectors, and (iii) Fourth ASEAN Climate Resilience Network Meeting. The Executive Secretary hoped that these workshops would produce such recommendations to be considered at the next ATWGARD meeting. (vwh)
