In the 2018, Asian Games are officially known as the 18th Asian Games. The Asian Games are Asia's regional multi-event sports that will be held in Jakarta and Palembang (South Sumatera), Indonesia on August 18 to September 2, 2018. Also, there are several cities as host supporters in the West Java and Banten Provinces. 40 branches of sports will be contested, and it consist of 32 olympic sports and 8 non-olympic sports.

The Ministry of Agriculture through the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) participates specifically in the equestrian competition which are namely Dressage, Eventing and Jumping. In order to obtain the Self Declaration of Equine Disease Free Zone (EDFZ) by OIE, IAARD has responsibility to ensuring the health of horses for the competition. Moreover, there are 130 horses from 17 countries are participating in the 18th Asian Games.

Furthermore, IAARD has the Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory to check the horse’s health and to get EDFZ’s certificate. The role of (BSL-3) is very crucial. In BSL-3, the test of the horse’s health is conducted to ensure the horse that is free from various diseases including exotic diseases as required before entering Indonesia. It is not only limited to horse diseases but also research on the other dangerous animal diseases such as Nipah, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Anthrax, Ebola, and Avian Influenza that require a laboratory with a high level of security. The test utilizes BSL-3 laboratory which is owned and managed by the Indonesian Research Center for Veterinary Sciences (IRCVS). This office is one of the Technical Implementation Units of the IAARD that is located in Bogor, West Java Province.(AW)
