News » Genetic Resources of Local Superior Fruit Plants in Jakarta

(adm/Mei 17, 2019)

Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) has a very important role in supporting the fulfillment of food needs both directly and indirectly. Numbers of varieties of plant commodities have been used intensively as food, meanwhile, number of other untapped plant species are known to have potential in supporting plant breeding programs.

Climate change is an important issue that potentially threats fruits PRG availability. Global warming and natural disasters can spur genetic erosion against existing fruits PRG. Therefore, fruits PRG needs to be conserved in order to be sustainable for the importance of supporting food availability and security.

The first step in the effort to preserve fruits PRG can be done through a series of inventory activities and documentation of data. Then, collection and conservation activities (maintenance) both in situ (sticky land) and ex situ (collection at the gene bank).

Several PRG found in Jakarta that are considered as the wealth of the Indonesian people and are controlled by the nation and used for the prosperity of the citizen among others
